Storyteller · Publisher · Coach · Guide

Tom Cottrell is a South African author whose work sits at the crossroads of endurance, meaning, and recovery. He has written and independently published three major books, each shaped by personal experience and a deep interest in how ordinary lives are transformed by extraordinary moments.
His first narrative work of nonfiction, Five Hour Pilgrim, emerged from a mid-life reckoning. During the year he turned 50, Tom ran a marathon on every continent, raising funds for Hospice and documenting a global pilgrimage of soul-searching, reinvention, and quiet resilience.
His second work, Comrades Marathon – 101 Years of Highlights & Heroes, is a tribute to South Africa’s greatest sporting institution. Written during the Covid years, it explores how a race born in the aftermath of World War I became a unifying force for a fractured nation — and why the “Ultimate Human Race” continues to shape generations of runners.
Tom’s third and latest book, Millwood, is a sweeping historical-literary novel spanning 140 years. Moving from the Knysna gold rush to modern-day Johannesburg, it blends family saga, murder mystery, myth, generational trauma, and the long shadow of addiction. At its heart is a haunting question: can a curse be broken, or does it simply find new forms?
As a publisher, Tom has collaborated with leading South African writers including Don Oliver, John Cameron-Dow, Dr Lindsay Weight, Rory Steyn, and others.
For more than thirty years, he has been the driving force behind the Runners’ Guide to Road Races in South Africa, an institution in local sport. His contribution was recognised in 2006 with induction into the Runner’s World Hall of Fame. He has since published guides for running, cycling, and open-water swimming.
As a coach and motivator, Tom has helped hundreds of runners achieve their Comrades Marathon goals. Earlier in his career, he worked with the coaching team of a Comrades champion, gaining first-hand insight into elite performance. He was also South Africa’s first Run/Walk franchisee, guiding many corporate executives toward healthier, more balanced lives.
As an athlete, he has completed Comrades five times and run more than 100 marathons across the world.
Beyond running, Tom has served as a Hospice counsellor, supporting families and patients through grief, loss, and end-of-life journeys. He is also in lifelong recovery from alcoholism, a path that informs both his writing and his work with others seeking hope, clarity, and freedom.
Tom holds a degree in accountancy and law from the University of the Witwatersrand and has completed short programmes in creative writing, digital marketing, and investment management. His life’s work reflects a simple through-line: the search for meaning, endurance, and redemption — on the road, on the page, and in the quiet interior places where change begins.
